Romania - Wooden churches of Maramures

Located in northern Romania, the wooden churches of Maramures were built from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The churches share some architectural characteristics : they are narrow, high, timber constructions with tall clock towers, either single or double-roofed and covered by shingles. Most of the wooden churches of the region were rebuilt after the last great Tatar invasions in 1717. Eight of these churches from Maramures were included in the UNESCO WH list in 1999. They are :
- Church of the Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple in Barsana (built in 1720)
- Church of Saint Nicholas in Budesti (built in 1643)
- Church of the Holy Paraskeva in Desesti (built in 1770)
- Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Ieud Deal (built in the 2nd half of the 17th century)
- Church of the Holy Archangels in Plopis, built in 1796
- Church of the Holy Parasceve in Poienile Izei (built in 1604-1632)
- Church of the Holy Archangels in Rogoz (built in 1663)
- Church of the Holy Archangels  in Surdesti (built in 1766)
