The city of Salvador de Bahia was founded by the Portuguese in 1549 and was the first colonial capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763. The historic center of the city is called the Pelourinho (Pillory). From 1558, Salvador de Bahia was the first slave market in the New World, with slaves arriving to work on the sugar plantations. UNESCO WHS in 1985
